What's the Tournament Format for the 2023 League of Legends World Championship?
The 2023 League of Legends World Championship introduces an all-new format. To kick things off, the fourth seeds from LEC and LCS regions will compete in a BO5 showdown on October 9th to secure the last ticket to the championship. The Play-In stage, starting this year, will consist of eight teams: the fourth seeds from LEC and LCS, the top two teams from VCS and PCS, and the champions from CBLoL, LLA, and LJL. These teams will engage in double-elimination BO3 matches, culminating in a BO5 face-off to determine which two teams will advance to the Swiss Format.
The Swiss Format features 16 teams, initially avoiding matchups from the same region. Teams with the same records will battle each other (1-0 teams face other 1-0 teams, and so on). When a team faces potential advancement or elimination, BO1 matches turn into BO3. Teams must secure three victories to advance, with three losses leading to elimination. Ultimately, eight teams will progress to the Knockout Stage.
The seeding for the Knockout Stage follows these principles: Teams with 3 wins and 0 losses are the top two seeds; teams with 3 wins and 1 loss are seeds three to five; and teams with 3 wins and 2 losses are seeds six to eight. These eight teams will compete in a BO5 single-elimination format until the 2023 League of Legends World Champion is crowned.
